BNSF #5263 leads a southbound merchandise train at M.P. 370.1, a few miles north of Mojave. It's all down hill into Mojave, but this train will just pass through town as it makes its way to Barstow. The grade here is a heavy-duty 2.20%. The mountains in the background are the southern Sierra Nevadas, and if you look closely, you can see a four-wheel drive that switchbacks up the mountain, which will eventually take you to Dove Springs, Kennedy Meadows and Monache Meadows. This is an extreme telephoto shot that has a tendency to compress the distance, yet the Sierras are only a few miles away. Mojave is truly a four-season town, and a four-wheeler and railfan's paradise.
