Certainly the oldest and undoutebly the most famous section of railroad line in the west is ex Southern Pacific's, now Union Pacific's Donner Pass route, also known as the "Overland Route," or simply, "The Hill."  I live in Roseville, California, at the west end of the hill, so I have made frequent trips to Donner Pass.  Click on the image of choice to relive the recent Donner Pass trip of your choice...

January 7, 2005, and I take another trip to Baxter, a.k.a. "Rawhide" in the Sierra snow.

September, 2004 finds me railfanning at Baxter, on Donner Pass, a little-known location among railfans.

February 28, 2004 finds me on a quick railfan trip to the snow, at Blue Canyon.

February 5, 2004, and I go raifanning in Blue Canyon and I catch the Reno Snow Train.

January 10, 2004:  Snow railfanning at Truckee, and the story of "Snowshoe Jim."

I hike to Andover,  in early August of 2003, to photograph U.P.'s freight trains at Andover, on Donner Pass.

June, 2003, and it's time to check out the tunnel at Midas, and the west end of Blue Canyon.
