Back to Tijuana Attractions

How many tourists to Tijuana's famed Ave. Revolucion, the mecca of all tourist attractions to Mexico have heard of Tijuana's Moorish-styled tower?  Yet, south of Calle 11, a.k.a., Calle Elias Calles (unique name for a street?) after Ave. Revolucion takes a curve to the east and becomes Blvd. Agua Caliente.  The tower is situated in a well-kept park at the corner of Blvd. Agua Caliente and Av. Francisco Madero, just south of Calle 11, or about 3 block south of the well-known Jai Alai stadium, at Calle 8 and Av. Revelucion.

So what is it about the Tijuana Tower, a.k.a. El Torre de Tijuana?  Well, the original tower served as an airport beacon in the late 1920's and early 1930's in the days of American Prohabition; norteamericans would flock in droves south of the border to drink, gamble and delve into prostitution.  In those days there was a casino on Agua Caliente, a couple of miles south of the present location of the tower.  The name Agua Caliente, translated in English to "hot water" stems from the fact that there were hot springs located at the casino, which also featured a health spa as an additional attraction.  The Tijuana Tower was originally erected to serve as an airport beacon, as the casino had a private airstrip.

The casino is history, after Mexico outlawed gambling in the mid 1930's, and the tower is a rebuilt replica of the ex-Agua Caliente tower, and is now surrounded by a beautiful park and busy streets.  You can walk under the tower, rest on the park benches under the shade trees, or enjoy the sometimes-open museum that occupies the second floor of the tower.  Or if you really want to kick-back, just sit on a park bench, under a shade tree, and watch the world of Tijuana, and northern Mexico, pass you by.

When you're shopping on Ave. Revolucion, take the plunge, walk a little south of the Jai Alai stadium, and check out the Torre de Tijuana.  Brag to all of your seasoned Tijuana friends that you've seen a part of Tijuana that only a few outsiders know exists.
