In Tijuana's Zona Rio, located at the intersection of Paseo de los Heros and Blvd. Independencia, there is the mother of all traffic circles and in the middle of it, is the "world's largest scissors" statue. This monument is very impressionistic, and it goes by several names, including The Scissors, The "M," Las Tijeras, or the Iron Monument. Actually, its officially known as the Independence Monument, and its supposed to commemorate the two California's, Baja California, Mexico, and California, U.S.A. I can't help to wonder about the Mexican state of Baja California Sr?
Photo: The world's largest scissors, standing in a very busy traffic circle in Tijuana's Zona Rio. The monument is located on a very busy traffic circle, which features the most concentrated cluster of traffic signals that I've seen in my travels to Tijuana, as several major avenues converge at this spot, including Federal Highway 2, which will take you east to Tijuana's airport, or east along Federal Highway 2 east to Treat, and beyond... Oh, by the way, I'm told that the reason why this monument has earned the nickname, The "M," is because it resembles the letter "m" from any angle. Only in Tijuana!
