Back to Mexicali Food

I was just about ready to make my way across the border, back to my rented motel room in Caliexico, when I spotted a lady with a ice chest and a small cart selling pre-made tortas, at the corner of Blvd. Lopez Mateos and Av. Fco.I. Madero, in the Primera Sección, of Mexicali, the capitol city of the Mexican state of Baja California, across the street from the famous Hotel Del Norte, the most infamous hotel in downtown Mexicali.  I was still hungry and I could not resist the urge to purchase a torta, from a friendly, local vendor.

Left:  The Torta Lady sells tortas across from the famous Hotel Del Norte, located at the corner of Bvd. Lopez Mateos and Av. Madero in downtown Mexicali, only a couple of blocks south of the border.  Right:  The Torta Lady has a simple place set up, with just a table, a couple of chairs, and an ice chest.

Delores operates this small food vendor stand from the sidewalk, across the street from the hotel, and she sells tortas, wrapped in plastic, pre-made from her home, and soft drinks.  The tortas soft drinks are kept cold, as they're obtained from an ice chest that's located on the sidewalk next to her stand.  Her torta stand basically consists of a table, with pre-made tortas, wrapped in plastic, placed on the table, the remaining inventory of tortas, and soft drinks, are contained in the ice chest.  It's a low-budget business at best!

Although the tortas are pre-made at Delores' home, it doesn't mean that they're not fresh and delicious.  For the price of MEX $12.00, you get a fresh bollio for the bun, with mustard and mayonnaise to spice it up a bit.  For your torta, you get 4 slices of ham, a grilled pepper, sliced carrot, sliced avacado, sliced tomato and diced lettuce.  All of this for a little over a U.S. dollar!

Left:  Delores strikes a classic pose, as she's about to serve me a torta.  Note the pre-made tortas on the table in front of her.  Right:  My delicious torta.  Note the carrot slice, the lettuce, grilled pepper, avacado, tomato and the slice of ham.  Her tortas are truly delicious!

If you're looking for a bargain-priced sandwich, look up Delores at the corner of Mateos and Madero, just across from the Hotel Del Norte.  You can't beat the price, and the quality of food, and she'll give you a friendly smile. Highly recommended by the author.
