Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga is the name of the actual body of water, which is an extension of the Sea of Cortez, but its also the collective name for the general community that surrounds the bay, including the resort communities of Rancho Grande, Alfonsina's, El Faro, and resort/fishing camp of Papa Fernández.
Photo: The signs that direct the traveler from the main gravel road to Papa's Resort. The sign advertising the restaurant is constructed from a couple of 55-gallon drums. Papa Fernández resort is located about three miles north of Ranch Grande, along the infamous Baja Peninsula East Side Road, just before the military check point. The resort is marked by a homemade, rustic sign, made in part from a 55-gallon plastic barrel, that advertises the services that the resort has to offer: Camping, fishing, and a restaurant. A two-track dirt road leads downhill to Papa's, which is situated in a rather idyllic location, tucked away behind an imposing rock, along a serene, beautiful bay.
Photo: Papa Fernández's, as seen from the main road. Note the secluded bay, the beautiful rock formations, the sandy beaches, and the blue sea in the background... truly spectaculor! The resort takes its name from its founder, Gorgonio (Papa) Fernández, who established a fish camp at the picturesque location in the mid 1950's, and later moved his family there, as ledgend has it, in a rowboat from loreto. Today, Papa Fernández's is a welcome stop for Baja adventurers, like myself, who dare to travel the infamous Baja California East Shore Road from Chapala, on Highway 1, to the beautiful town of San Felipe, over a hundred miles to the north. Papa Fernández offers a number of interesting thing to the Baja traveller, including: *
Restaurant, which serves great food, reasonal prices,
and friendly service

As you drive up, the first thing that you'll notice is
the substantial brick building, where the restaurant is located.
Photo: Only dogs and paying guests are allowed beyond the restaurant. The resort office is located across from the restaurant; it's easy to find and staffed by friendly people. No, I didn't get the opportunity to camp, or stay at Papa Fernández, as I only was there to enjoy a fine breakfast at the restaurant, and to do a bit of exploring. But I had quite a conversation with the co-owner of the restaurant, Claudia, who cooked my breakfast for me, and after I told her what I was doing, she answered many of my questions, and gave me a bit of background information about the restort. She also suggested that I visit their web site for more informaiton.

Photo: This isn't your typical resident of Papa Papa Fernández, but this bus, turned into a camper actually serves as this guy's house. The scenery is beautiful, the atnosphere is mellow and laid-back and the people are very friendly, so what isn't there to love about Papa Fernandez? I will be back, next time, to stay a few days... Fernández
