In addition to yachts and fishing boats, Ensenada is a major port of call for cruise ships. It's a major deepwater seaport on the west coast of Mexico and is also host to a major intermodal terminal that's a destination for container ships. From the malecon, you can see the huge cranes that are used to unload the containers.
Along the malecon, there are many business that rebuild and repair fishing boats and personal yachts. Just to the north of the port captain's office are repair facilities for large ocean-going vessels.
During my April, 2005 visit to Ensenada, two cruise ships visited the port. Sunday night, April 17, 2005, both the "Infinity" and the "Island Princess" were moored to the cruise ship pier. Also, the "Carnival Spirit" made a brief port call of about four hours. I also had the opportunity to view a fully-loaded outbound container ship leave the harbor.
If you like to watch all sorts of ships and boats, Ensenada is the place to be. It adds another dimension to this fascinating city.
