Guerro Negro is the first town encounered south of the 28th parallel, marked by the huge, stylized iron eagle, and the most northly town the state of Baja California Sur. It is a company the owes it's existence to the salt works that surrounds Laguna Ojo de Liebre, a.k.a., in Englsih, as Scammon's Lagoon. The town gets it's name from a whaling ship, the Black Warrior, that was wrecked in the lagoon in the mid 19th century.
Photo: This is where Bvd. Zapata joins Highway 1, marked by the signs in the distance. Motels and other business begin almost as soon as you exit the highway and head towards town. The majority of the town of Guerro Negro is built up along the main street in town, Bvd. Emiliano Zapata, which runs west from the transpennisular highway to the bay. Most of the motels, stores and restaurants are located along this strip, along with the two gas stations in town.
Photo: Looking west on Bvd. Zapata from the corner of Zapata and Ruiz, across the street from Motel San Jose. If you're looking for gas, keep driving west, about 2 miles west of the highway, and you'll see the Pemex gas station on your right, just before the street curves, and enters the "company town" portion of Guerro Negro.
Photo: These guys don't seem to mind the coastal fog, as they commute to work, along Bvd. Zapata, in a way that would be frowned upon north of the border. I stayed overnight on Monday, September 29, 2008 at Motel San Jose, but didn't get a chance to explore the town, due to the fact that I was suffering from a fit with Montezuma's Revenge, and Montezuma seemed to be getting the better of me, so I basically holed-up in my motel room to sleep it off. The photos and captions speak for themselves. Enjoy the visit to Bvd. Zapata. Copyright(c) 2009 eRench Productions, Inc. All rights reserved. This site has been on the web since January 19, 2005.
