Back to Shoe Trees!

This little upstart shoe tree pales in comparison by some of the other ones that I've written about, but I'm cutting this tree some slack, as I suspect that it's just beginning the transformation, from an ordinary piņon pine to the most blessed of botanical specimens:  A Shoe Tree!  But what this up-and-comer lacks in the way of it's quantity of shoes, the fact that it is the only game in the area, and it has the makings of becoming a valued member of the shoe tree community.

The Yucca Valley Shoe Tree is another Southern California shoe tree, located in a median strip of Highway 62, near Mission Creek Road, roughly halfway between the towns of Yucca Valley and White Water, CA.  Unless you were on the prowl for a shoe tree, you'd almost miss it, as it's location is somewhat awkward, hard to reach, and doesn't fit the quasi-essential location favored by most shoe trees.  Yet, it's there, and since it's a shoe tree, it's a force to be reckoned with!

To reach this tree, you have to park on the side of Mission Creek Road, and then carefully cross the highway, keeping a sharp eye out for oncoming traffic.  State highway 62 is fairly busy, and carries more than it's share of big rigs, so safety is a concern.  I would imagine the CHP would take a dim view of a shoe tree enthusiast dallying in the median strip, so I imagine you'd have to quickly throw your shoes into this tree, and then make tracks before a wandering cop arrives.  Shoe throwers:  Are you up to the challenge?

As of this writing, March 13, 2009, this tree only has a few shoes, but it seems to be well on its way to becoming the shoe tree phenomenon of Yucca Valley, and maybe even western San Bernardino County.  We'll keep an eye on this up-and-comer to the shoe tree community.

GPS coordinates for the Yucca Valley Shoe Tree are N33.59.020, W116.35.030, elevation 1640 feet.
